Family Leadership Program

The Family Leadership Program is a six-session series designed to help parents and caregivers gain the skills, confidence, and knowledge to become leaders in their children’s education. Families learn how to identify issues that impact student success, collaborate with schools to develop solutions, and actively participate in decision-making that benefits all students .

Program Goals

By the end of the program, families will:

  • Recognize that their involvement directly improves their student’s academic performance.

  • Identify the most pressing issues affecting education in their school community.

  • Work together as family leaders to engage in open dialogue with principals, teachers, and school representatives.

  • Co-create strategies that support students’ progress and strengthen the school environment .

What Families Learn

The program guides families through:

  • The importance of family engagement: Understanding its impact on student achievement and overcoming barriers to participation.

  • Seeing yourself as a leader: Exploring what leadership means and developing personal leadership qualities.

  • Exercising leadership: Identifying school-centered issues and organizing to bring about positive change.

  • Participating in decision-making: Learning how to be part of committees and processes like ELAC, DELAC, School Site Council, or PTA.

  • Team presentations: Presenting findings and solutions to school leaders.

  • Next steps and graduation: Planning continued engagement and celebrating accomplishments .

Why Leadership Matters

Research shows that when families are active partners in education, students are more likely to:

  • Score higher on exams

  • Earn better grades

  • Improve behavior and attendance

  • Take advanced classes

  • Stay on track for graduation and college

Through the Family Leadership Program, parents move beyond traditional roles—like attending meetings or volunteering—to true leadership, helping shape the policies and practices that impact their children’s futures.

Tools and Support

Participants also receive hands-on practice using the ParentSquare PIQE App, which makes it easier to communicate, share strategies, and overcome language barriers. The program equips families with reflection questions, handouts, and exercises that encourage collaboration and practical application at home, school, and in the community .
