PIQE Parent Ambassadors Featured in EdSource Article on English Learner Rights

We are proud to share that two of PIQE’s parent ambassadors, Martha Rivera and Teodora Mendoza, were recently featured in an EdSource article by reporter Zaidee Stavely on the critical issue of English learner rights in California.

The article, California leaders warn schools: English learner rights remain despite Trump rollback, underscores the importance of ensuring that every English learner continues to receive the instruction and support they need, despite recent federal actions rescinding longstanding guidance.

Martha Rivera, a parent leader in Riverside and president of the District English Learner Advisory Committee, spoke with urgency about what is at stake if schools neglect their responsibility:

“If our children who are English learners don’t get reading, writing, listening and speaking help, it will be fatal. Because a child who does not have reading comprehension is a child who will not advance in school.”

Her words reflect the lived reality of many families across California who rely on schools to provide the resources necessary for their children’s success.

Similarly, Teodora Mendoza, a parent from San Jose, shared how school-based language supports transformed her daughter’s life. Arriving from Mexico over ten years ago without speaking English, her daughter is now in college. Teodora emphasized how vital translation services were for parents as well:

“It helped me communicate with the teacher and ask how my daughter was doing. It reassured me about sending my daughter to school.”

Their voices highlight exactly why PIQE’s work is so essential. Families must be partners in education, and their advocacy ensures that laws and policies translate into real opportunities for students in classrooms.

At PIQE, our Parent Ambassadors program equips parents like Martha and Teodora with the tools, training, and confidence to advocate for equitable access to education. Seeing their leadership recognized in statewide coverage reinforces the power of parent voices in shaping policy and practice.
