At just 18 months old, many toddlers can swipe, tap, and scroll before they can speak in full sentences. By preschool age, screens have become a daily companion, quietly reshaping how children learn, play, and connect.
Before they turn two, most children are already spending about an hour a day on screens, far more than experts recommend. By preschool, that number doubles. Children ages 5 to 8 average 3.5 hours of screen time each day, according to a recent Common Sense Media census, 2025. The same report found that 40% of 2-year-olds own their own tablet. By age 4, that number rises to 58%, and by age 8, one in four children has a cellphone.
This growing dependence on screens is raising alarms among pediatricians and child development experts, who warn of potential long-term effects. Research cited by the National Library of Medicine indicates that excessive screen time can impact cognitive, language, physical, and social-emotional development. Children may experience delays in language skills, fine motor development, emotional regulation, attention span, and memory, and face higher risks of obesity, social withdrawal, and behavioral issues. Effects have been seen even in children as young as six months.
“The holistic development of children has changed significantly in recent years,” said Lissa Muñoz, a teacher with 25 years of experience. “Many kindergarten age children can’t jump, bounce a ball, or even hold a pencil properly. Their little hands lack strength and coordination.”
Physical coordination is just one aspect; children’s language skills are also being affected by screen time. When young children spend large portions of their day in front of screens, they miss out on the rich, back and forth interactions that are essential for language development. Real life conversations expose children to varied vocabulary, tone, and context, and allow adults to respond to cues, correct mispronunciations, and encourage expressive language. Without this social feedback, children may struggle with sentence structure, vocabulary, and social-emotional cues.
“The most vulnerable areas to screen time include childhood language and learning networks,” said Dr. Kemal Başaranoğlu, MCC, a neuroscience-based coach, author, and Ph.D. candidate in neuroscience at Üsküdar University, whose work explores how neuroplasticity and behavior shape learning and development. “Excessive screen time at a young age can negatively affect the white matter pathways that promote language and reading skills, resulting in poorer attention, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.”
In addition, language skills, or the lack of them, are closely linked to social skills. Communication is foundational for interaction, and the ability to describe feelings and understand what others say is essential for empathy, cooperation, and forming friendships. “Sure, they talk to each other, but if they see a child alone, it’s rare for one to have the empathy to invite them to play,” said Muñoz. “They don’t know how to delegate or offer help.”
Excessive screen use also affects attention, memory, and executive function. Children who are overexposed to screens often have difficulty following directions, solving problems, and transitioning between tasks, which can lead to lower academic performance compared to their peers. “Screen overuse deprives children of memory enhancing activities like play and exploration,” Başaranoğlu said. “Limiting screen time and substituting it with play-based, interactive activities is critical for cognitive development.”
A 2019 study found that preschoolers with high tablet use performed significantly worse on fine motor tasks than their peers. The reason is quite clear, extended screen time limits opportunities for hands-on activities such as stacking blocks, crawling, and manipulating objects, all crucial for coordination and muscle development.
“If I ask them to move beans from one plate to another using their fingers or fists, many can’t do it. And if I ask them to count on their fingers, they twist them awkwardly because they simply don’t know how,” said Muñoz.
Digital devices are often used for comfort as well. According to Common Sense Media, one in five children use devices to soothe themselves at mealtimes or bedtime, and 17% of parents report that their children often use devices to calm down when upset. Paradoxically, studies indicate that early and excessive exposure to digital media can worsen behavioral and emotional difficulties, including impulsivity, aggression, and trouble recognizing emotions.
“Making mistakes frustrates them because they’re not used to it. They lack patience and tolerance. Everything has to be quick and instant,” said Muñoz.
Screen overuse can also disrupt sleep, affect posture, contribute to obesity, and increase risks of anxiety and depression. Research also links early screen exposure to a higher likelihood of being involved in bullying, either as a bully or as a victim.
“Everything is so automated that we’re forgetting to teach children the basics: lying on the floor, getting dirty, playing with different textures. We’re overlooking the fact that children need to explore to learn, and that this exploration helps them become more empathetic, patient, and sensitive human beings.”
While the research is clear about the developmental risks of excessive screen use, experts agree that eliminating technology from children’s lives entirely is neither realistic nor necessary. Technology is woven into nearly every part of our lives, and using devices in school is becoming increasingly common. Studies, including a 2025 Pew Research Center report, show that “the vast majority of parents (86%) say making sure their child’s screen time is reasonable is a day-to-day priority.”
The challenge isn’t prevention, but balance: finding ways to help children engage with technology intentionally while protecting time for exploration and imaginative play.
In addition, for children who have been hyper-exposed to devices and screen time, the brain has the ability to rewire itself. Children’s brains can recover. Neuroplasticity is strongest from birth to age 25 but continues throughout life.
Parents should recognize signs such as delayed language development, sleep disturbances, violent behavior, or mood changes as early warnings that a child may be overstimulated or struggling to focus. Limiting screen time while encouraging play, exploration, and face to face interaction supports healthy emotional and social growth.
Activities like mindfulness, reading, and brain challenging tasks can help children rebuild attention, memory, and cognitive control. The goal isn’t to eliminate screens entirely, but to use them intentionally and restore balance so that children’s brains can develop according to age-appropriate milestones.
