Working Together to Support English Learners

In today’s digital world, most are privy to the tools and skills it takes to download an app that will teach a new language. Having such resources at our fingertips can be both essential and entertaining. That said, there is a lack of support for English learners most apparent in the area of communication. In some cases, those who took brave and difficult strides towards a better life in the United States, do not have something most of us take for granted-an email address. PIQE, California Together, The Education Trust West and other stakeholders are working together to support English learners.

How are we working to support English Learners?

Together, we are participating in the Central Valley Multilingual Consortium Listening Sessions. These sessions give leaders from various professional and community organizations an opportunity to join in on this important conversation. It is a chance to learn and draw from one another’s experience and expertise. On Tuesday, Aug 10th, we discussed the critical role that community-based organizations play in supporting the educational success of students. After reviewing the data, it raised awareness to the disparities and supports not offered to English learners.

“Our English Learners are encouraged and empowered to strive towards higher education, but lack the experience of critical thinking and tools necessary for success.”

How can you get involved?

Together, we are establishing new pipelines to support these resilient families, offering roadmaps that educate and empower them to voice their needs and concerns at various committees. We are creating educator awareness. It is our aim to inspire professional development that wholly supports English-learner students.
